Our Sustainability Vision
At Ortra, we believe every conference or event can be a force for good. As a leading Professional Conference Organizer (PCO) and Destination Management Company (DMC), we recognize that sustainability is not just an industry standard—it’s a shared responsibility.
Across the global events sector, sustainability has become a core expectation—and we embrace that responsibility with intention and action.
Waste Reduction & Recycling
We’ve eliminated single-use plastics from our conferences. Instead, we use biodegradable alternatives or real glassware, china, and metal utensils.
Water dispensers and refill stations replace single-use plastic bottles, and we often provide branded reusable bottles to attendees or encourage them to bring their own.
Sustainable Catering
We collaborate with caterers to offer responsible menu choices, featuring local and seasonal ingredients (which cut down on transport emissions) and plant-based options to lower the meal’s carbon footprint. Whenever possible, at least one menu during a multi-day conference will be vegetarian or vegan, showcasing delicious low-impact cuisine.
Energy & Emissions
We strive to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with our events. In our offices and at event venues, we prioritize energy-efficient solutions – from using LED lighting and smart climate control to powering down equipment when not in use.
We also encourage sustainable transportation for event travel. Ortra actively works with attendees, suppliers, and staff to promote public transit, car-pooling, and other low-carbon transport options.
Digital & Paperless Solutions
We use digital event platforms, mobile apps, and QR codes for agendas, tickets, and feedback, which means less paper waste. Many necessary print materials, such as signage and badges, are designed for reuse year after year or printed on recycled paper. Going digital not only saves trees – it creates interactive experiences for attendees. For example, our conference apps allow live Q&A and e-materials, eliminating the need for thousands of printed programs
Inclusive & Accessible Events
We design our events to be welcoming and accessible to all, regardless of physical ability, age, gender, or background. We strive for diversity in our speaker lineups and panel discussions, ensuring a range of voices, including women, minorities, and international experts, are heard. Our staff are trained to be sensitive to cultural differences and to assist anyone who needs extra help navigating the event.
Supporting the Local Economy
We believe in the power of local. Whenever possible, we prioritize hiring local suppliers, ensuring that our events support the surrounding community and boost the local economy. From showcasing regional talent at professional conferences to incorporating locally produced food and wine into event experiences, we strive to create meaningful, authentic connections through every choice we make.
